DIN 6923 Hex Flange Nut Equivalent: ISO 4161, DIN EN 1661, ASME and JIS

DIN 6923 is the legacy German designation for a hexagon flange nut. Its integral flange spreads bearing load and can often replace a separate flat washer, but the flange does not automatically provide a locking function.

DIN 6923 standard relationships

Reference Relationship Direct replacement?
DIN 6923 Legacy German flange-nut standard Legacy reference
DIN EN 1661 German/European replacement relationship Verify edition and dimensions
ISO 4161 Closest international metric coarse-thread counterpart Commonly interchangeable for matching sizes, verify details
ASME B18.2.2 Related flange-nut standard, mainly inch series No automatic metric replacement
JIS B1190 Related Japanese flange-nut reference Verify edition and dimensions
UNI 7473 Polyamide-insert prevailing-torque nut Not equivalent

DIN 6923 vs ISO 4161

DIN 6923 and ISO 4161 describe the same basic product type: a metric coarse-thread hex nut with an integral flange. Before substitution, compare thread pitch, width across flats and corners, flange diameter and thickness, nut height, bearing-face form, product grade, material and tolerances.

The accurate procurement wording is: DIN 6923 and ISO 4161 are closely related metric coarse-thread flange-nut standards; verify the applicable edition and dimensions before treating them as interchangeable.

DIN 6923 vs DIN EN 1661

DIN EN 1661 represents the German/European replacement route for the legacy DIN 6923 designation. For a legacy drawing, keep the original reference in the conversion record and confirm the current project standard and dimensional table.

Plain, serrated and knurled flanges

A plain flange spreads load but does not create prevailing torque. A serrated flange increases resistance to rotation but may mark the mating surface. A knurled or serrated execution must be stated separately; the standard number alone should not be assumed to define the bearing-face detail.

A serrated flange nut is not automatically equivalent to a nylon-insert or all-metal prevailing-torque nut. Locking mechanism, installation torque, reuse and temperature limits differ.

ASME and JIS references

ASME B18.2.2 is primarily an inch-series nut standard. It is a functional reference, not an automatic replacement for a metric DIN 6923 M-size nut. JIS B1190 is the more relevant Japanese flange-nut comparison; verify its edition, flange dimensions, thread, grade and tolerance.

JIS B1181 is a general hex-nut standard, not the direct flange-nut counterpart. UNI 7473 is a polyamide-insert lock nut and should not be mapped to DIN 6923.

Material, property class and thread

DIN 6923 does not identify one universal material or strength level. Specify steel or stainless material, property class, coating and corrosion requirements separately. ISO 898-2 may support metric steel-nut properties, while the applicable ISO 3506 series may support stainless nuts.

ISO 4161 is primarily a coarse-thread reference. State the complete pitch, for example M10 × 1.5; do not assume that a fine-thread flange nut follows the same product standard.

Replacement checklist

Confirm standard edition, nominal diameter and pitch, width across flats and corners, flange diameter and thickness, nut height, plain/serrated/knurled bearing face, material, property class, coating, mating bolt and supplier drawing.

Final recommendation

DIN EN 1661 is the relevant German/European replacement route, and ISO 4161 is the closest international metric coarse-thread counterpart. ASME flange-nut standards and JIS B1190 are related references requiring dimensional review. Do not treat UNI 7473 or JIS B1181 as direct equivalents.
